Businesswomen from around the region have been learning how to ‘get themselves heard’ at a special copywriting workshop organised by the University of Bedfordshire's Centre for Women’s Enterprise (CWE).
Twenty-three business owners attended the one-day Get Yourself Heard workshop (run by Mel Henson of Words That Sell) designed to show small business owners how to plan and write their own marketing material to save time and money and boost their company’s profile.
During the day participants defined their services, target customers and key marketing messages, and received methods, tips, know-how and short cuts from professional copywriter and business owner, Mel Henson.
Head of the CWE, Dawn Jordan, said: “Good advertising with a well-focused message is extremely powerful and can make a huge difference to a business, yet owners of small businesses often do not have the finances to hire a professional copywriter. Thanks to support from the European Social Fund (ESF) we were able to bring them the experience and advice of a professional copywriter at a fraction of the price.”

Women’s Enterprise Ambassadors at work in Bedfordshire! EEDA’s (the East of England Development Agency) Women’s Enterprise Ambassadors have been hard at work, helping to inspire Bedfordshire and Luton women to ‘become their own boss’ through enterprise awareness events ran by the Centre for Women’s Enterprise (University of Bedfordshire).
The events, ran as part of an Investing in Communities (Bedfordshire and Luton) programme, allowed over 50 women to gain inspiration, knowledge and advice from five women ambassadors by listening to their journeys into enterprise and the experiences gained along the way.
The ambassadors who spoke at the events were: Jane Barnes – Yakkety Yak Multi-Media www.yakkety-yakmultimedia.com
Mel Henson – Words that Sell www.wordsthatsell.co.uk
Julie Jones – Changes Forever www.changesforever.com
Elinor Ashby – Aspirations Life Coaching www.aspirationslifecoaching.co.uk
Pauline Wilkes - Fitzpatrick Wilkes & Co www.fitzpatrick-wilkes.co.uk
Following the awareness events many women have been inspired to attend further training and information days to help them become their own boss. The success stories are now beginning to filter through with at least two women set up as self employed and trading – all within a few months of the awareness and training sessions!
